Pumice and Concrete: Applications and Benefits of Pumice

Pumice-Crete is a low density, lightweight, low-rise structural concrete using 3/8 pumice aggregate, Portland cement, and water. The honeycomb-like walls are formed and poured at a typical thickness of 18-24 inches, with no additional structural reinforcement or insulation needed.

Pumice and Concrete: Pumice-Crete Structures

The Pumice-Crete mixture is cast into place using lightweight formwork, typically at a thickness of 18-24 inches and finished with a quality cementitious plaster inside and out, further enhancing the thermal performance of the thick honeycomb-like wall.

Green Home Building: Light-weight Concrete

Lightweight concrete may be made by using lightweight aggregates, or by the use of foaming agents, such as aluminum powder, which generates gas while the concrete is still plastic. Natural lightweight aggregates include pumice, scoria, volcanic cinders, tuff, and diatomite.

Pumce Concrete: Lightweight, Insulating, Durable

Low-slump pumice concrete will flow when vibrated, and finishers can get on it much sooner when the slump is held to two-to-three inches. 3 Avoid over-vibrating or over-finishing pumice concrete. When using normal-weight concrete, segregation and over-finishing cause the paste to come to the top.

How to Make Concrete Lighter Hunker

The substitute mixture, known as Pumice-Crete, uses the porous crushed volcanic rock to create a lighter concrete that even acts as a moderate insulator. The Pumice-Crete can be used in applications where concrete is the norm, creating long lasting, load-bearing walls weighing a fraction of what traditional concrete weighs.

Pumice-Crete Building Systems of New Mexico Pumice-Crete

How Pumice-Crete Works Mostly buildings have been cast on site using forms to create walls. Pumice-Crete is mixed, either at a central plant and delivered in standard mixer trucks, or right on site, and poured into forms.

All the Walls of My House are Made of Pumice-crete

Pumice-crete is a mix of pumice aggregate a very porous volcanic rock , portland cement, and water. The mix is mostly pumice with only enough cement to bind it together. This is considered a “lean mix” which maximizes the thermal insulating qualities of the walls. The mix is poured into forms creating 14” thick exterior walls and 8

Has anyone heard or experienced any down side to using

I live in western oregon with high humidity ,the pumice would come from our abundant pumice fields. pumice can't rot can't burn and has 1.5R per inch . The only down side I see is there are no codes for pumice and would need to get an engineers report for earthquake stability using rebar.

Low-Cost Green Home

Unlike wood, Pumice-Crete will not burn, rot, or get eaten. The uniformly coarse Pumice-Crete surface allows a stucco finish without the use of stucco netting. The light weight of Pumice-Crete allows the use of lightweight forms, made of half-inch plywood and 2x4s, that can be saved for use on another building project.

Homemade Lightweight Concrete Blocks Garden Guides

Turn on the mixer and mix the cement and pumice thoroughly. Add 5 gallons of water to the mix. Wait until the mixer wets all dry ingredients, covering the pumice with the now wet cement mix. Set the concrete block molds onto a flat surface while mixing the pumice-crete mixture. Fill the molds with the pumice-crete using a spade.

BUILDING WITH PUMICE: Making blocks out of pumice, lime

Accordingly, it’s better to make solid bricks than cavity blocks out of pumice-lime mixes, since the thin walls of the latter are much more susceptible to breaking and therefore require more caution in their manufacture and use. What can you make with pumice?
